Mobile Ministry

In 2024, the New York City Area launched a Mobile Ministry thanks to the support of an NYC Area KM. The St. John Committee helped fund the first-year operational costs.

Run by Order of Malta volunteers, the 15-person passenger van helps us stock food pantries, transport construction materials to build homes, bring guests to Malta Camp USA, and help young and vulnerable mothers move into safe apartments.

A Ministry in Motion

Since its launch, the NYC Area Mobile Ministry has been instrumental in extending the Order’s work in New York City and forging new partnerships. Time and again, the van has proven itself a workhorse for large-scale food relief. It has delivered thousands of pounds of pasta, sauces, and pantry staples to St. John's Bread & Life in Brooklyn—one of the borough's largest emergency food providers—often mobilizing within hours of a donation coming in. Whether it's a last-minute truckload of Mac & Cheese or a delivery of Italian pantry staples in the dead of winter, the Mobile Ministry has shown that when the Order works together, it can move mountains.

Among these, the ministry has built a critical partnership with Thrive for Life, a Jesuit-run prison ministry nonprofit that helps formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society. The van helps bring the formerly incarcerated to spiritual retreats, stock food pantries for families affected by incarceration, and transport supplies for housing and vocational programs, allowing the NYC Area to participate in prison ministry, a void the Area had long hoped to fill.

The Mobile Ministry has also become a trusted partner to the Sisters of Life, helping move furniture and furnishings so mothers transitioning out of the Sisters' care can settle into their own apartments. Often, even if a new mother can find stable housing, the time and costs of a move can affect her lease, stability, or even ability to care for her child.

The ministry continues to grow its reach into other corners of need across the city, with an eye toward expanding support for NYC's homeless population and hungry families beyond Manhattan.

Your Call to Serve

Today, the Order of Malta cares for people in need in 120 countries through medical, social, and humanitarian works, including right here in New York City. The Order’s work is grounded in our Catholic belief that every person possesses inherent dignity.

In NYC, volunteers of all faiths, ages, and backgrounds work alongside over 180 Knights and Dames to honor this dignity through faith and hands-on service. We gather for monthly Mass and special liturgies, deepening our spiritual lives to witness God's love through our service. We bring meals and medical care to the homeless, joy to children with disabilities, and companionship to the elderly and isolated.

Volunteers play a critical role in our work. If you have felt the call to serve, the first step is joining the Affiliates, the official volunteer corps of the Order of Malta. Joining as an Affiliate is a wonderful way to learn more about the Order and meet our community, as well as to explore membership—becoming a Knight or Dame of the Order.
